The Evolving Architect Role

What the enterprise architect becomes in an agentic enterprise.

The enterprise architect's job is being redrawn. In an agentic enterprise the centre of gravity moves from systems to strategy, from enforcing standards to shaping the decisions that actually matter. Three roles come to the front: the strategist who translates AI capability into business-architecture choices; the risk owner who designs accountability for autonomous agents in from the start; and the communicator who can tell a board why an architectural choice is a governance decision, not just an engineering one. The architects who struggle here aren't short on technical depth — they defined their whole value by it, and found themselves left out of decisions made without them. Deep technical knowledge still matters; it just has to buy strategic influence now rather than stand on its own.
